CSA Week 10 Recap and Week 11 Share

So here's what happened to last week's share:

  • Zucchini- 2 pieces- went into the Zucchini-Pesto Pancakes
  • Garlic- 1 head- used in various recipes through the week including pesto and Vegetable Fried Rice
  • Bell peppers- 2 pieces
  • Potatoes- 1 1/2 pounds- Pan-Fried Potatoes with Fontina and Herbs. I love this recipe; next time I make it I'll remember to take a picture and blog about it.
  • Cherry tomatoes- 2 pounds- Some became a salsa for the Zucchini-Pesto Pancakes; others became simple side salads tossed with olive oil, vinegar, and basil. We also had a nice side for the Vegetable Fried Rice, which involved tossing halved cherry tomatoes with just a bit of soy sauce and sesame oil.
  • Slicing tomatoes- 1 1/2 pounds- Panzanella, among other uses
  • Basil- 1 bunch- tossed with the cherry tomatoes in various ways
  • Cabbage- 1 small head-Whoops, no slaw yet. Still in the fridge.
  • Melon- 1 small specialty melon (unknown name!)- Turned out to be cantaloupe-like; Ryan and I ate it for breakfast one day, and he took the rest to daycare in his lunch (per his request: "I want the farm melon today, Mommy.")
  • Blackberries- 1/2 pint- These were the quickest to disappear, mostly straight into Ryan's mouth, but we also had some atop our frozen lemonade pie for dessert. The slightly tart berries were a nice contrast to the sweet and creamy pie.
  • Flowers- 10 stems (not pictured, but we did get some. Mostly zinnias this week.)
And here's what we got this week:

This was a very quick photo- we were late getting home from the farm and someone was clamoring for lunch!

  • 30 stems of flowers- I got rudebeckia, bachelors' buttons and a few others types- hadn't yet trimmed or arranged them in this photo.
  • 1 watermelon- oh, we were so excited to get a watermelon this week! As you can see, we'd already cut into it and as I took this photo Ryan was inside enjoying a slice (several slices, actually). Moments after I turned off the camera, all three of us had watermelon juice dripping down our arms. Delicious and just the right size for our family.
  • 1 mystery melon- think it's the same as the one we got last week, which turned out to be cantaloupe-ish in color and flavor.
  • 1 bunch scallions (in a choice group with basil and cabbage)- I have plenty of basil in my own garden at the moment and last week's cabbage is still in the fridge, so scallions it was.
  • 1/2 pound cherry tomatoes
  • 2 1/2 pounds slicing tomatoes
  • 1 1/2 pounds potatoes
  • 1 head garlic
  • 2 summer squash
  • 2 peppers- I think the ones I chose are Italian frying peppers but I'm not sure.
  • 1 pint green beans
  • 1 1/2 pounds shallots- hooray! I love shallots.
  • 1/2 pint blackberries- raspberries were open for picking too, but we walked down an entire row and only found 4 that were even vaguely ripe, so we filled our 1/2 pint with all blackberries.
Weeks like this remind me that upgrading to a "family" size CSA share would be more than we could handle. If we'd had a family size share, all amounts above would double except the blackberries and the melons. 5 pounds of slicing tomatoes and 3 pounds of shallots- it's not that I couldn't think of ways to use them (or preserve them), it's having the time to do so. Maybe someday!

That's one lovely share!
Don't you love this point in the summer?

I love the fact that your CSA offers flowers as well as foodstuffs. Beautiful.
