Given the reports of hail damage, I was really pleased with this week's share. The zucchini had some ragged pockmarks, but otherwise everything looked great. And while it's a shame that the remaining lettuce and chard crops went to waste, I'll admit I'm a *teeny* bit relieved that we didn't have yet more lettuce to bring home this week!
There were even watermelons today, though not for the individual shareholders- only family shareholders got them. Individual shares got a small cantaloupe-ish melon of unknown name. Trying to explain to Ryan that our share this week included a little melon and not one of the big watermelons was tough. But the news that the blackberries were open for picking cheered him right up! The amount was small- only 1/2 pint- but it's always small at first. And there were plenty of ripe berries. Once again Ryan amazed us with his ability to find and pick perfect berries. I showed him an example of what we wanted (a nice purplish-black that almost falls off the stem into your hand) and I think he added more to our little container than either Jason or me! PYO flowers are also back, though in smaller quantities than we're likely to see later in the summer.
Here's what we got today:
- Zucchini- 2 pieces
- Garlic- 1 head
- Bell peppers- 2 pieces
- Potatoes- 1 1/2 pounds
- Cherry tomatoes- 2 pounds
- Slicing tomatoes- 1 1/2 pounds
- Basil- 1 bunch
- Cabbage- 1 small head
- Melon- 1 small specialty melon (unknown name!)
- Blackberries- 1/2 pint
- Flowers- 10 stems (not pictured, but we did get some. Mostly zinnias this week.)
The basil and cabbage were part of a choice group that also included beets and onions. I liked that the cabbages were small enough to use up in one shot- we'll make some slaw this week. Ryan already ate a lot of the blackberries, but there are enough left to use for dessert tonight. As for the other stuff, I'll work it all in somehow!

That looks like a great share this week! Nice diversity... and blackberries! Oh, I'm jealous!
