Forget-me-not?

Hmmm. On Saturday afternoon I ventured out to find places for, and then plant, some of Friday's garden center impulse purchases. The tag on my petite and perky little blue forget-me-nots says they prefer part sun or shade, so I looked for a good spot in our little shade garden along the back of the property. Found a nice place where they'd be nestled in front of some hosta and lilies and started digging. Popped the plants into the ground, firmed up the soil around them, scraped the mulch back into place. And then had a flash of deja vu. I suddenly remembered that a few years ago, I planted forget-me-nots in the EXACT SAME SPOT and they withered up and died. How is it that I didn't recall this when I first saw the plants at the garden center, or even when I was selecting a spot in the shade garden, before I had them in the ground?? I guess this is why people keep garden journals.

I think the plants that died came as part of the initial "shade garden" set I ordered from an online nursery, and a bunch of those plants didn't last long, so maybe the original forget-me-nots were just of cruddy quality, and the location had nothing to do with their demise. I hope.
